Compañeras

U.S.A. / 2007 / 60 mins.

Synopsis: Currently airing in US on PBS’ Independent Lens, COMPAÑERAS is an intimate profile of America’s first all-female mariachi band. Taking on a male-dominated culture and musical tradition, this 12-member group has been shattering stereotypes about Latina women while expanding the popularity of mariachi music.

Dynamic musical performances transition to intimate portraits of the band members, illuminating how the harsh realities of their daily lives contrast with the emotional magic of mariachi music. And, like any band, this one has plenty of interpersonal dramas, as one devoted fan auditions for and gets in the group while the band’s longtime leader is forced out.

Combining stunning performances with behind-the-scenes drama, Companeras reveals the intense, passionate world of female mariachi.
